Programme

Day 1: Johannesburg – Greater Kruger area (Balule Game Reserve)

Departing Johannesburg (approx. 06:30) and driving in a north-easterly direction to the historic town of Haenertsburg, where a bustling mining town sprang up after a gold discovery by the Haernert brothers.

During the journey, a magnificent landscape varying from mountain passes to typical African plains with acacia trees.

Lunch in Haenertsburg. Afterwards, drive via the hills of the northern Drakensberg mountains to the so-called Lowveld.

The next 2 days will be spent in the Lowveld bordering the famous Kruger Park.

The Bush Lodge is situated in the Balule Nature Reserve which borders, without fences, the world-famous Kruger National Park.

Day 2: Kruger Greater area (Balule Nature Reserve)

As is usual in Africa, the day begins early. After a cup of coffee or tea and a “rusk” (a combination of biscuit and rusk), a game drive in an open safari car in the Balule Nature Reserve.

During the approximately 3-hour game drive, guided by an experienced ranger, in search of the BIG FIVE that are found here.

The ranger will also be given information about life in the bush and the animals that occur here.

After the game drive, we head back to the lodge for a well-deserved brunch and to cool off in the swimming pool. The afternoon is for relaxing and enjoying this delightful environment.

At the lodge, there is a waterhole where animals come to drink during the hottest parts of the day.

In the afternoon, when the weather is a bit cooler and the animals become more active, a game drive in an open safari vehicle that transitions into a night drive.

During the game drive in search of the animals native to this area, and with a bit of luck, nocturnal animals such as the porcupine, hyena, leopard, bushbabies, and foxes may also be spotted.

After the game drive, back to the lodge for dinner, and then drift off to sleep with the sounds of the bush.

Day 3: Kruger Greater area - Panorama Route - Hazyview

Early start and after a lovely breakfast, departure from the Balule Nature Reserve.

Drive to the Panorama Route and visit the impressive Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and Gods Window.

Afterwards, drive to the open-air museum of the old mining town Pilgrim's Rest for a walk through the historic town.

For lunch, there will be a stop in the village of Graskop where lunch can be taken at Harry's Pancake Bar (at your own expense).

In the afternoon, drive to the lodge located on the Sabie River.

You can relax by the pool or take a walk in the adjacent coffee plantation and/or a forest walk.

 Overnight stay at the Greenfire Lodge Hazyview in a double room.

  • Activities include: visiting the Panorama Route with a visit to God's Window, the Three Rondavels, Bourke's Luck Potholes, and visiting a coffee plantation.
  • Optional activity: Gorge swing (130-metre zipline between the treetops)
  • Overnight stay: double room in chalets with a shared bathroom

Day 4: Hazyview (Kruger National Park)

Depart at sunrise and drive to the world-renowned Kruger National Park for a full day of game driving through the park.

A stop will be made at one of the rest camps for lunch.

At the end of the day, back to the lodge for dinner.

Overnight stay at the Greenfire Lodge Hazyview in a double room.

Day 5: Hazyview – Johannesburg

After a leisurely breakfast, depart from Hazyview and drive back to Johannesburg via a scenic route that was laid out for the pioneer gold prospectors.

Arrival in Johannesburg at the end of the day and after a brief stop at OR Tambo airport, a drive to the Protea Balalaika Sandton hotel.

End of arrangement.

This price is based on two travellers. For single travellers; For single travellers; a single supplement of €189 (2026) per person for a single room for the entire duration of the trip.

Optional extras:

  • Extra overnight stay in Johannesburg at the start of the trip: €55 per person per night in a twin room based on two people per room, including breakfast.
  • Single room supplement €30 (2026) per person per night.

Travel information

Number of participants:
Our comfort safaris are run in small groups to offer the best and most flexible programme possible. Small groups mean more time for the traveller, fewer waiting times, and a cosy, personal atmosphere during the trip.

The average age on this tour is 38-45 but ages range from 18 to 55. Minimum age for children is 6 years old, provided they are accompanied by at least one adult.

For travellers aged 65 and over, a medical “fitness to travel” certificate may be requested, obtainable from your GP. Guaranteed departure with 4 booked participants / maximum 16 participants.

Language
Since the participants on the above trip come from different countries, English will be spoken by the guide during the trip.

The trip is accompanied by two certified guides for optimal knowledge, information, and individual attention.

Visa
If you are not staying in South Africa for longer than 3 months and hold a Dutch passport that is still valid for at least 3 months after your return journey, you do not need a visa for South Africa.

There also need to be sufficient blank pages side-by-side in the passport for the necessary stamps. If you hold a nationality other than Dutch, please check with the Consulate of the relevant countries.

Afrika Online does not provide visas. For information, please visit the website of the visa service: www.visum.nl. Should travellers not be in possession of a valid passport and/or travel documents during their journey, any consequences will be at their own expense. (subject to change).

If you are travelling to or via South Africa with children under 18 years of age, you must be in possession of an International Birth Certificate extract.

If you are travelling as a single parent or alone with your minor child, you must also be in possession of a consent form from the other parent.

Highlights of the trip:

Naturally, during the trip, an effort will be made to visit villages and make contact with the local inhabitants.

Transport
Transport during the trip is by special Overland safari truck with adjustable seats and ample legroom.

During the morning and evening game drives on day 2, you'll go game driving in an open safari vehicle. Comfortable travel and excellent for experiencing game drives.

Large windows so everyone has a good view.

Luggage lockers are available for personal items.

Travel – Cancellation Insurance
Taking out travel insurance is mandatory. It is recommended to take out cancellation insurance.

Unfortunately, AfrikaOnline cannot arrange insurance. However, we kindly request that you email AfrikaOnline with the name of the insurer and the policy numbers of both insurances as soon as possible and well in advance of your departure.

Participation
From 7 years old, no maximum age. However, for every child under 18, at least one adult must travel along.

During the trip, walks will be made that require a certain level of stamina.

The walks are graded as easy to moderate and are always optional.

Teamspirit is part of the fun of travelling in a group.

Overnight stays
All overnight stays during this trip will be in twin rooms, chalets, and permanent safari tents.

Meals:
During the trip, good and healthy meals will be prepared from mostly local produce. The guides will generally prepare the meals.

Lunch is usually on the go in a local restaurant or in the form of a picnic brought from the campsite or prepared by the guide.

During this trip, 4 breakfasts and 4 dinners are included in the tour price.

Medical conditions:
Anyone in good health may participate in this trip.

Luggage
Travel bag (due to space in the car, it is best to bring luggage in a travel bag or backpack) with a maximum of 20 kg pp.

A small backpack for personal items such as your passport, phone, water bottle, sun cream, etc. is also very useful. A (hard) suitcase cannot be taken.
