*For this safari trip, a “local payment” is requested. This local payment will be collected by the tour leader at the start of each trip and is usually in the local currency or US dollars. The local payment will be used to cover, among other things, the entrance fees for the national parks and other excursion fees.

For solo travellers, accommodation during the safari is on a shared basis (at no extra cost) or with a supplement of €390 (2026) and €400 (2027) per person for a single tent/room.

Extension of the journey

On day 12, the journey ends for you around 2:00 PM in Lilongwe.

This trip supports the following causes: The Gwabi River Lodge is owner-managed and 100% of the staff are Zambian.

The lodge produces and sells eco charcoal at a cheap price in the Lower Zambezi Valley, which deters illegal logging by local people.

They also help a local school by donating vegetable seeds, installing water pumps and advising the local community on growing vegetables and fruit.

Vegetables and fruit are again being purchased from local people for use in the lodge. The wildlife camp is run by the owner and provides employment for 50 staff, all from Zambia.

All fruit and vegetables used at the lodge are bought from small local farmers and from the lodge's own vegetable garden. The Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia part-owns the lodge and has an educational facility to give local youth an insight into nature and wildlife conservation, including combating poaching.

Our camping safaris are conducted in small groups to offer the best and most flexible programme possible.

Small groups mean more time for the traveller, shorter waiting times and a cosy, personal atmosphere during the trip.

The average age on this tour is 38-45, but ages range from 20 to 60+ years.

The minimum age for children is 12 years, provided they are accompanied by at least one adult. There is no age limit as long as you are healthy and reasonably fit.

Language
As the participants on the above trip come from different countries, English will be spoken by the guide during the trip (with the exception of the departure dates, which are indicated with a * during these travels, German is mainly spoken).

Visa
If you are in possession of a Dutch passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your return from the trip, no visa is required for South Africa.

For Zambia and Malawi, a visa is required, which you can best arrange before departing from the Netherlands (no visa is needed for Mozambique, but pre-registration is required, whereby you receive a sort of e-visa; this can be arranged via the following link). www.evisa.gov.mz it is best to arrange it before leaving the Netherlands, no possibility at the border).

In addition, there must be sufficient blank pages side-by-side in the passport for the required stamps. Furthermore, since 1 July 2026, it is mandatory to complete a customs declaration online before arriving in South Africa. www.sars.gov.za/travellerdeclaration.

Should you not possess a valid passport and/or travel documents during your journey, the consequences thereof shall be for your own account. If travelling with children under 18 years of age, you must be in possession of a copy of the International Birth Certificate.

Highlights of the trip:

Transport
Transport during the trip will be by special 10/12-seater safari trucks and 4WD game viewing vehicles in Zambia. These offer comfortable travel and are excellent for game drives. Large sliding windows ensure everyone has a good view. Roof racks and a trailer are available for luggage and camping equipment.

Travel – Cancellation Insurance
Taking out travel insurance is mandatory. It is recommended to take out cancellation insurance.

If the insurance policies are not taken out via AfrikaOnline, we kindly request you to provide the name of the insurer and the policy numbers for both insurances to AfrikaOnline by email as soon as possible and well before your departure.

Participation
From 12 years old, no maximum age. However, at least 1 adult must travel for every child under 18. During the trip, there will be walks that require a certain level of stamina.

The walks are graded as easy to moderate and are always optional.

For all camping trips, participation is requested in setting up the tented camp, preparing meals, and of course, helping with the washing up. Team spirit is part of the fun of travelling in a group.

Overnight stays

Camping: 14 nights at campsites in the National Parks or cities. The campsites are generally excellent with good facilities such as hot and cold showers, restaurants, washing machines, post office/telephone booths, and a souvenir shop. Some campsites have a swimming pool.

It might happen that during this trip, so-called “wild campsites” are used. While staying at these campsites, self-brought bush toilets and bush showers will be used, meaning simple facilities.

The camping equipment; spacious and comfortable igloo tents of 2.2 x 2.2 x 1.5 metres that are easy to set up/take down. The tents have “built-in” mosquito nets. Furthermore, there are 5 cm thick mattresses and comfortable camping chairs with backrests.

Cotttages/ Chalets 1 night at Chimwemwe Lodge in a double room with bathroom, 2 nights at Sailway Guesthouse (or equivalent) with en-suite bathroom in Vilanculos, 2 nights at Bayview Lodge (or equivalent) with en-suite bathroom in Inhambane and 1 night at Makuwa Safari Lodge in a double room with an en-suite bathroom.

Meals:
During the trip, good and healthy meals will be prepared using predominantly local products. To give you an idea of what the meals will be like: breakfast will consist of cornflakes with milk, toast with jam, and occasionally a full English breakfast with eggs and bacon, fruit juice, coffee, and tea.

Lunch will mostly consist of cheese, cold cuts, salads and bread (picnic style). Dinner will be the most elaborate with regular BBQs, stir-fries and the typically South African Potjiekos (an all-in-one pot dish, delicious!!!!) prepared over the campfire.

If there are special dietary requirements (due to vegetarian preference and/or allergies), please state them when booking the trip so that they can be taken into account in advance.

Coffee and tea will also be served during dinner. Other drinks are not included and will need to be purchased separately. During this trip, 21 breakfasts, 19 lunches, and 16 dinners are included in the tour price, which are often prepared by the guides and eaten around the campfire.

In Petauke, breakfast is provided by the lodge, and dinner on the final evening is also provided by the lodge.

Anyone in good health may participate in this trip.

Luggage / Travel Bag
Travel bag (due to limited space in the car, we recommend bringing luggage in a travel bag or backpack) with a maximum of 20 kg per person.

In addition, a small separate backpack or a handy bag for personal items.

Bring your own (warm) sleeping bag, a towel, and a small pillow.

Reservations
The agent reserves the right to amend a programme if the agent deems it necessary due to certain conditions, force majeure or unforeseen circumstances.

Should the vehicle break down, the agent will not be responsible for alternative accommodation other than camping, and there will be no compensation for flights or similar.

The agent asks for a compensation form to be signed upon arrival and before departure of the trip.
