Days 2-3: The
From Windhoek, you drive south via the spectacular Remhoogte Pass or Spreetshoogte Pass towards Sesriem. This is the gateway to the oldest desert in the world: the Namib Desert.
• Travel tip: Ensure you camp at Sesriem Campsite within the park gates. This allows you to drive into the park an hour before sunrise to climb Dune 45 or photograph the iconic, dead camelthorn trees in Deadvlei during the finest morning light.
Days 4-5: Swakopmund and the meeting of desert and ocean
Via the desolate and impressive Kuiseb Canyon, you drive towards the Atlantic coast. Swakopmund is a charming coastal town with a unique German-colonial atmosphere. It is the perfect place to relax after camping and to enjoy excellent fish restaurants.
• Must-do activity Take a 4x4 excursion to Sandwich Harbour, where giant sand dunes plunge directly into the icy ocean, or book a boat trip from Walvis Bay to spot dolphins and seals.
Days 7-8: Damaraland and the search for desert elephants
You travel further north, past the rugged granite domes of Spitzkoppe. Damaraland is known for its prehistoric rock engravings at Twyfelfontein (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
The absolute highlight here is camping in the dry riverbeds, where you'll go in search of the rare, desert-adapted elephants with a local guide.
Days 9-11: Self-drive safari in Etosha National Park
No trip to Namibia is complete without a visit to Etosha. With your own 4x4, you can easily drive from waterhole to waterhole here. Because Etosha is very dry, the animals (lions, elephants, rhinos, and large herds of zebras) congregate in large numbers at these permanent watering holes.
Camping tip: Stay at the Okaukuejo and Halali campsites. The floodlit waterholes at these campsites are a magical place in the evenings where you can quietly watch the wildlife coming to drink for hours.
