Programme

Day 1: Windhoek (approx. 22 km)

Welcome to Windhoek Airport by a representative of the car hire company and transfer to the hire depot where you will collect your 4x4 vehicle with camping equipment.

Depart from the rental depot and drive to the campsite in Windhoek. The rest of the day is free for you to rest from your journey or to explore the centre of Windhoek.

Our tip, have dinner in the evening at the famous Joe's Beerhouse in Windhoek.

Day 2: Windhoek - Mariental (approx. 300 km)

Depart from Windhoek and drive south towards Mariental. En route, you will get a very good impression of Namibia's natural beauty.

Day 3: Mariëntal – Keetmanshoop (approx. 275 km)

Today you continue south to the small, rural village of Keetmanshoop. Near Keetmanshoop you will find the “Quiver Tree Forest” where approximately 300 quiver trees stand out against the arid desert with their smooth bark and yellow flowers.

Day 4: Keetmanshoop – Fish River Canyon (approx. 175 km)

Depart from Keetmanshoop and drive south to the third-largest canyon in the world, the Fish River Canyon. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure.

Day 5: Fish River Canyon

Full day at your leisure to explore the surroundings. Hikes can be undertaken or a sunrise/sundowner drive in the Fish River Canyon.

Day 6: Fish River Canyon – Aus (approx. 280 km)

Depart from the Fish River Canyon and drive west towards the village of Aus. Near this village, you will also find the well-known “ghost town” of Kolmanskop and the “Desert Horses”.

Day 7: Aus – Namgorab Mountains (approx. 204 km)

Today you will get acquainted with the Namibian desert and drive through a beautiful landscape to Helmeringhausen (tip; have lunch at the Helmeringhausen hotel)

From Helmeringhausen, drive to Betta with a stop at Duwisib Castle. The entire day will be spent traversing beautiful sand tracks, sometimes a bit rough, through the desert until you reach Betta Camp.

Day 8: Namgorab Mountains - Sesriem (approx. 160 km)

Depart from Betta and drive to a special place in the desert, the “little town” of Sesriem. Arrive in the afternoon, and from Sesriem you can visit the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei and watch a beautiful sunset.

The campsite is in the park so you don't have to wait in line at the gate and can head out early tomorrow morning.

Day 9: Sesriem

Full day to explore the surroundings of Sesriem and visit the red dunes of Sossusvlei.

Day 10: Sesriem – Namib Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park (approx. 102 km)

Depart from Sesriem and drive to the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The afternoon is at leisure to visit the park. There are various hiking trails and rock pools for swimming.

Day 11: Namib Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park – Swakopmund (approx. 335 km)

Depart from Namib Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park and drive towards Swakopmund. En route, you will pass the settlement of Solitaire, which became famous due to the Dutch filmmaker Ton der Lee, who lived here for two years and described his adventures in the book “Solitaire”.

You can stop for coffee and a “world-famous” apple pie. After the break, drive through the Naukluft National Park to the coastal town of Swakopmund.

En route, you will pass the Kuiseb Canyon, a magnificent area with beautiful vistas. In Swakopmund, you can clearly observe the German influences in the historic buildings, the beaches, and the shops.

Days 12 & 13: Swakopmund

Day at leisure in and around Swakopmund.

You can take a rest day or choose from a variety of excursions and activities on offer, such as: sea fishing, quad biking through the dunes, a hot air balloon ride, a boat trip, a scenic flight, a Living Desert explorer tour, and many more.

Day 14: Swakopmund – Uis (approx. 240 km)

You travel through a rugged desert steppe area to Uis and the region around the Brandberg. Overnight at the campsite near Brandberg, where you can go for lovely walks and swim in the pool to cool off after a day in the sun.

Day 15: Uis - Twyfelfontein (approx. 115 km)

Depart from Uis and drive through the Namibian interior to Damaraland and the region around Twyfelfontein. In the afternoon, view the rock paintings.

Day 16: Twyfelfontein – Etosha National Park (approx. 340 km)

Today, we'll be driving along partly unpaved roads through deserted nature reserves towards Etosha National Park. We'll arrive in the afternoon and will have a first game drive through the park on our way to the Okaukuejo rest camp.

Three days to explore Etosha National Park with game drives in your own car, guided sunrise or sunset game drives offered by the rest camp, or simply enjoying nature and the animals coming to drink at the waterhole from the camp.

From the Okaukuejo rest camp, you can visit the Fairy Tale Forest (Sprokieswoud), located 32 km west of the rest camp, which is a collection of the whimsical African moringa trees.

Day 17: Etosha National Park (approx. 70 km)

A full day at your leisure to explore Etosha National Park as you drive from Okaukuejo Rest Camp to Halali Rest Camp.

In the afternoon, you can take a dip in the swimming pool and we certainly recommend keeping an eye on the illuminated waterhole at the Halali rest camp, where animals come to drink and leopards are regularly seen.

Day 18: Etosha National Park (approx. 81 km)

The whole day is free to explore Etosha National Park while driving from Halali rest camp to Namutoni rest camp. In the afternoon, you can take a dip in the swimming pool.

Day 19: Etosha National Park - Ghaub (approx. 154 km)

Depart from Etosha National Park and drive towards the town of Tsumeb. Time to explore Tsumeb.

In Tsumeb, you can visit the Mining Museum, St. Barbara Church, and the Tsumeb Arts and Crafts Centre for lovely souvenirs. Afterwards, continue driving to the Ghaub Nature Reserve.

Day 20: Ghaub

A full day to discover Ghaub Nature Reserve. A number of enjoyable activities can be booked, such as an afternoon rhino drive or a morning rhino tracking on foot. There is also an excursion to the limestone caves of Ghaub Nature Reserve.

There are various walking trails, or you can relax by the pool.

Day 21: Ghaub – Waterberg Plateau National Park (approx. 180 km)

Depart from Grootfontein and drive to the Waterberg Plateau.

Rest of the afternoon is yours to explore the surroundings or visit the nearby Cheeta sanctuary.

Day 22: Waterberg Plateau National Park

Full day to explore Waterberg Plateau National Park or to visit the nearby CCF Cheetah Conservation Fund.

Day 23: Waterberg Plateau – Windhoek (approx. 280 km)

Depart from Waterberg Plateau National Park and drive to Windhoek. En route, stop in Okahandja at the craft market for some last-minute souvenirs.

In the course of the afternoon, drive to the rental depot at the airport where you must return the car by 4:00 PM.

Transfer to Windhoek Airport.

Travel information

Camper van
Suzuki Jimny 4x4 1.5 litre petrol with roof tent, Toyota Hilux Single Cab 4x4 2.4 litre diesel with roof tent (maximum 2 people), Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4L diesel with 2x roof tents (maximum 4 people), Toyota Hilux NAVI Camper 4x4 2.4 litre diesel (maximum 2 people).

For photos, descriptions of the camper, and rental conditions, please see our website under car/camper rental. To rent a 4x4 camper or 4x4 car with a roof tent and camping equipment, you must hold a valid driving licence and an International Driving Permit (available from the A.N.W.B.).

Additional costs such as the security deposit and any extras you wish to hire must be paid on-site by credit card. Visa and Euro Mastercard are accepted.

Driver
The driver must be at least 25 years of age and hold a valid B driving licence.

Participation
All ages.

Visa
If you are a Dutch national, you will need a visa for travel to Namibia from April 2025, plus a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your return from the trip.

If you enter Namibia via Windhoek airport, you can apply for a “visa on arrival” at a special counter (expect longer waiting times) or apply for an e-visa no more than 90 days before departure via the following link. https://eservices.mhaiss.gov.na/. There must also still be enough empty pages next to each other in the passport for the necessary stamps (at least 3).

If you hold a nationality other than Dutch, you must request information yourself from the Namibian Consulate. AfrikaOnline does not arrange visas. For information, you can visit the website of the visa service, for example. www.visumdienst.nl.

The consequences for the individual are their own responsibility should they not possess a valid visa, passport, and/or travel documents during the journey.

If you are travelling with children under 18 years old, you must possess a copy of the International Birth Certificate. If you are travelling as a single parent or simply travelling alone with your minor child, you must also possess a consent form from the other parent.

Luggage
Suitcase or travel bag (due to the limited space in the camper, it is best to pack your luggage in a travel bag). You can also unpack your luggage at the rental depot and leave your suitcase in storage.
