Travel information
Number of participants:
Maximum of 6 persons per vehicle, but multiple cars can be deployed. The group safari already has a guaranteed departure for two booked persons.
Language
As the participants on the above trip come from different countries (an international party), the guide will speak English during the trip. Upon request, we can arrange guides speaking other languages. The trip will always be accompanied by a certified guide/driver for optimal knowledge, information, and individual attention.
Visa
For travel to Kenya, you must possess a valid Dutch passport, which must remain valid for at least 6 months upon departure from Kenya, and an entry visa. The e-visa for Kenya can be applied for online via this link; etakenya.go.ke
A visa valid for 90 days costs US$ 30–35 per person (subject to change). Apply for the eTA at least 7 days before departure via the official government website. For further information, please contact the Kenyan Embassy in The Hague.
Time difference
The time difference is 1 hour in the summer months, and 2 hours in the winter months.
Banks and finance
With the exception of Nairobi (from 09:00 to 15:00) and Jomo Kenyatta Airport (24 hours a day), banks in Kenya are generally only open on weekday mornings.
All major hotels and most lodges are licensed to exchange foreign currency and travellers' cheques. In Nairobi there are several cash machines (but please note that these do not always work).
US dollar traveller's cheques and credit cards (VISA, Mastercard and Barclaycard) are widely accepted. American Express is not accepted. Cash in US dollars only, and in small denominations.
The local currency is the Kenyan shilling.
Health and Safety
The sun in Kenya is warmer and more intense than you can imagine. Even on a cloudy day, you can still get badly burnt. Therefore, a good sunscreen (at least factor 30) is essential, as is a good sun hat and sunglasses.
Drink plenty, but never from the tap; it's better to buy bottled water. Most hotels and lodges will provide drinking water in your room.
Hospitals and healthcare
If you have visited a country where yellow fever is prevalent before your visit to Kenya, vaccination against it is compulsory. There are small field hospitals dotted around Kenya.
Larger hospitals are only found in Nairobi and Mombasa. It is therefore also important to inquire about recommended vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis well in advance of your departure.
It is also wise to put together a small travel first-aid kit with Imodium for diarrhoea, ORS, etc. (also check out www.gezondheidsnet.nl/reisapotheek).
The Flying Doctors Society of Africa offers temporary membership for tourists for a small fee. In return, “members” receive free air transport to a hospital or medical centre in the event of a serious accident or severe illness while on safari.
Malaria
The best way to prevent malaria is to avoid being bitten. During dusk and dawn, wear long trousers and long-sleeved shirts, and use DEET on your ankles, hands, and neck.
In addition, it is highly recommended to take good malaria prophylaxis. Please consult your GGD for more information.
Photography
In Kenya, it is prohibited to take photographs of the President, police, military personnel, prisons, and airports. If you wish to take photographs of the local population, it is advisable to ask for permission beforehand.
For you, it may be a cherished holiday memory, but many residents of Kenya are superstitious and do not want you to take photographs of them. Keep your camera in a zipped-up bag or container.
Transport
Transport during the trip is by 4x4 safari Landcruiser. Comfortable travel and excellent for game drives. If two people are booked on the relevant travel date, another, smaller type of car may be used.
Travel – Cancellation Insurance
Taking out travel and cancellation insurance is compulsory. It is highly recommended to take out cancellation insurance. Unfortunately, AfrikaOnline cannot arrange insurance, and we would be happy to refer you to, for example, the ANWB.
We kindly request that you provide us with the name of the insurer and the policy numbers of both insurances by email to AfrikaOnline as soon as possible and well before your departure.
Participation
This trip is also suitable for children and although the distances between the different parks are sometimes on the long side, there is enough time to stop along the way and there are interesting things to see en route.
To optimally enjoy this trip, we recommend not travelling with children under 8 years of age (with exceptions). However, for every child under 16 years, at least 1 adult must accompany them.
Medical conditions:
Anyone in good health may participate in this trip.
Luggage
Travel bag (due to space in the car, it is best to bring luggage in a travel bag or backpack) with a maximum of 20 kg pp.
Reservations
The agent reserves the right to amend a programme if the agent deems it necessary due to certain conditions, force majeure or unforeseen circumstances.
Should the vehicle break down, the agent will not be responsible for alternative accommodation other than camping, and there will be no compensation for flights or similar.
The agent asks for a compensation form to be signed upon arrival and before departure of the trip.
Failure to sign this form may result in the passenger being refused travel.
