Border crossings to and from South Africa
From 1 June 2026, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) will require all foreign-registered vehicles entering or leaving South Africa to complete a temporary import declaration.
To assist customers with this, the rental company will provide the necessary supporting vehicle documentation and a letter of authorisation upon collection of the vehicle.
What drivers must do:
- The driver transporting the vehicle across the border must complete the SARS traveller's declaration once the vehicle has been received.
- Customers are strongly advised to complete the declaration online before arriving at the border.
- The declaration can be completed via: https://www.sars.gov.za/travellerdeclaration/
Drivers should bring the following:
- Passport or identity card
- Valid driving licence
- Tenancy Agreement
- Landlord's Cross-border Letter
- Vehicle documents provided at collection
Important:
- The declaration is linked to the driver offering the vehicle at the border.
- If another driver brings the vehicle back across the border, SARS may require an additional declaration procedure.
- Border officials may request verification of the Temporary Import Permit (TIP).
Landlord's recommendations:
- Please complete your statement before Reach the border to avoid delays.
- Ensure the driver crossing the border is listed on the rental agreement.
- Allow for additional travel time during the initial implementation period.
