Hi Leony,
From beginning to end, it was a surprising journey.
The chosen route was very good. First, we stayed for a total of 4 days around Cape Town. We didn't visit the city itself, so we could get used to South Africa (shopping, traffic, etc.), the camper, and the campsites. During those days, we made 2 excursions, to West Coast National Park and to the Cape of Good Hope. From the beginning, the beautiful landscape was noticeable, as well as the cleanliness everywhere. It's a shame that the enormous difference between rich and poor goes hand in hand with the skin colour of the population, black and white, which is especially visible in the townships.
We then travelled more or less along the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth with wonderful stops in Hermanus, Swellendam, Mossel Bay, Wilderness and Tsitsikamma.
At Port Elizabeth, we turned left to head north, and after 50 kilometres, we reached Addo Elephant Park via the worst road of the entire holiday. We stayed there for three days and had some lovely game drives, during which we saw a lot of animals. It later turned out that we were quite lucky; others saw no or hardly any animals.
From there, we “returned” to Knysna, where we once again had a lovely campsite 15 minutes“ walk from ”The Heads", the well-known rock formations that protect the lagoon in front of Knysna from the Indian Ocean. Our campsite was located on the east side of the lagoon. Near the East Head, there was a charming little restaurant with a beautiful view of The Heads, the lagoon, and Knysna. We walked there twice in the evenings for a delicious meal.
Incidentally, we've never had a holiday where we've eaten so well in restaurants every single day.
After Knysna came Oudtshoorn. It rained on the way, and it was 12 degrees, though it warmed up later. The campsite owner in Oudtshoorn, which was a beautiful campsite again, told us that Oudtshoorn was situated in a valley, which is why it rarely rained there. We had barely set up on our pitch when it started raining!
Visited Prince Albert from Oudtshoorn. Not much to it in itself, but there were some beautiful houses. The drive there and back, however, was incredibly beautiful. Also visited an ostrich farm from Oudtshoorn. A wonderful experience.
After Oudtshoorn, we had our only unpleasant day. The weather was quite reasonable in itself, but the drive to Swellendam, Bontebok Park, was boring. With the exception of the Tradouw Pass, which was nice. The campsite in the park was also not as enjoyable and/or beautiful as all the previous campsites. To be honest, we were glad to move on the very next day.
Off to Stellenbosch, our last stop already. Again, a splendid campsite and, very remarkably, beautiful weather for the entire duration of our stay. Stellenbosch turned out to be a very enjoyable and beautiful town, surrounded by magnificent wine farms (actually wine palaces). All in all, a lovely end to a wonderful holiday.
We really enjoyed our stay with a motorhome, and driving on the left wasn't too bad either. After all, everyone does it there. The campsites were beautiful and clean (apart from one, then), the roads surprisingly good (apart from one, then). The food was fantastic.
Finally, one more remark about Bobo campers.
The first few days we had problems with the car. Bobo's service was great, they even came to exchange the camper. However, this was not the service we were expecting. It was already exciting enough for us, this first time with a camper.
There was absolutely nothing to fault with the other services, the information booklet, the campsite reservations, and the route book. Brilliant!
Two more comments about the motorhome itself. The refrigerator in the motorhome, that's not possible. As far as I know, it doesn't have a thermostat, so it just kicks in every so often. Apparently, there were complaints about this, and it's naturally very disturbing, especially at night, which resulted in a note in the information booklet saying ’turn it off at night“. Yes, then you won't be bothered at night. The chilled products can handle that, but your frozen products will be defrosted.
Finally, the “garden furniture”. That was a disgrace; at home, I would have put that out with the rubbish.
So, that was it then. Next year again?
Greetings,
Joke and Joop
