In short

Get off adventure in the Pangalanan channel  and discover the river and lake system.

Meet six types lemurs, including the elusive Aye-aye in the Palmarium Reserve . Dive into the Andasibe Natural Reserve for a night-time walking adventure in the countryside and see how the local people are helping to ensure sustainable conservation in the V.O.I.I.M.A. Nature Reserve.

At the end of the journey, you’ll discover it the tropical island of Ile Sainte Marie met rainforests, waterfalls, lakes and a great underwater world met Coral reefs ideal for Snorkelling and diving.

Programme

Day 1: Arrival Antananarivo Airport

On arrival at Antananarivo airport, after customs formalities, you will be welcomed to Madagascar and transferred to your accommodation.

Depending on your arrival time, there will be time to explore the surroundings of the hotel or take a refreshing dip in the pool.

Day 2: Antananarivo - Andasibe

In the morning, a delicious breakfast and then at 10:00 AM, meet your guide and fellow travellers. Make sure your suitcases are packed as you'll be heading straight to Andasibe afterwards.

En route to Andasibe, a magnificently green environment and an area primarily consisting of tropical forests and lakes. Along the way, we can see the Merina Villages, small villages, often on a hilltop, typical architecture for this eastern part of Madagascar.

Arrival in Andasibe and lunch at your own expense. After lunch, there will be some free time to enjoy the surroundings.

In the evening, a guided night walk led by experienced guides in search of active lemurs and other nocturnal animals such as chameleons and owls.

Day 3: Andasibe Natural Reserve - Antananarivo

This morning, breakfast on time and departure around 7:00 AM for a visit to the Special Reserve of Andasibe in search of the Indri, the largest lemur on the island of Madagascar.

As well as the Indri lemur, the park is home to a stunning array of flora and fauna endemic to this area, including 12 other species of lemur, orchids, chameleons and more than 100 species of bird.

In the afternoon, a visit to the V.O.I.I.M.A. community reserve. This is a sustainable eco-tourism site managed by the local community. It offers an intimate, less crowded alternative to nearby national parks and specialises in spotting the rare Pinocchio chameleon, Indri Indri lemurs and various other chameleon species.

The project is run by local residents who organise guided tours that directly support the community.

Day 4: Andasibe – Akanin’ny Nofy

After breakfast, we drive to Manambato. Manambato is a small, quiet village on Lake Rosoabe, situated on the east coast of Madagascar, approximately 90 km south of Tamatave.

It is an important departure point for boats sailing to the Pangalanes Canal and Akanin’ny Nofy.

We sail via the Pangalanes Canal to the Palmarium Reserve or Akanin’ny Nofy.

This private nature reserve of 50 hectares on the Pangalanes Canal is best known for the opportunity to observe lemurs up close and where, with a little luck, we may even see the endangered Aye Aye.

Day 5: Akanin’ny Nofy Reserve

This morning, a visit to the Palmarium Reserve where we will be looking for the different lemur species to see them in their natural habitat.

In the afternoon, a visit to a nearby village to get acquainted with the culture and way of life of the Malagasy people.

After dinner, an excursion with experienced trackers in search of the Aye Aye lemur, which only appears in the dark.

Day 6: Akanin’ny Nofy Reserve – Tamatave – Île Sainte-Marie

This morning I woke up early and set off at first light from Akanin'ny Nofy for a boat trip along the Pangalanes Canal towards Tamatave.

On the way, a beautiful green landscape and the “hustle and bustle” of the local fishing villages on the banks of the canal.

Upon arrival in Tamatave, a short transfer to the airport for the flight to the idyllic Ile Sainte Marie. After landing, a welcome by a representative of the Natiora Green Lodge and a transfer to the lodge.

Upon arrival, time to relax and enjoy this beautiful tropical island.

Snorkelling and scuba diving are possible, and walks can be taken along the white sandy beach.

Day 7-8-9: Ile Sainte Marie

Days at leisure on Sainte Marie Island.

A must do during your stay at Natiora Green Lodge is a walk through the lodge's gardens, which are rich in endemic and medicinal plants unique to Madagascar.

Day 10: Île Sainte-Marie - Antananarivo

Today is the last day of our stay on Île Sainte-Marie, with a domestic flight from the island back to the capital, Antananarivo.

Upon arrival in Antananarivo, a guided city tour including a visit to the historic Kings Palace on Blue Hill with panoramic views over the city.

Extension of the journey
If you prefer a longer or shorter stay in Madagascar, that is possible.

Prior to this journey, you can spend a few nights in Antananarivo to acclimatise, an extra night's stay costs €93 per person.

After your trip, it's wonderful to relax on the beach of Nosy Bay, go on a diving excursion, or if you haven't had enough of Madagascar, you can extend your trip with another journey through the northern part of Madagascar.

A tailor-made trip to suit your personal wishes is also possible, of course. If you let us know your requirements, we will be happy to create an exciting quote for you.

Small groups mean more time for the traveller, shorter waiting times and a friendly, personal atmosphere during the trip. Min. 4 / max. 10 participants.

The journey will be accompanied by a certified, English-speaking guide/driver.

Visa
When staying in Madagascar for less than 15 days and holding a Dutch passport, this passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure from the country, and must have sufficient blank pages for the required stamps.

No visa is therefore required. If you stay longer than 15 days, a visa is mandatory. This visa can be applied for online via the following link www.evisamada-mg.com/en/home.

If you hold a nationality other than Dutch, please contact the Consulate or Embassy of Madagascar in your country.

Highlights of the trip:
During this safari, you will visit the highlights of Madagascar with visits to the capital, Antananarivo, the Andasibe Natural Reserve, Ranomafana National Park, Isalo National Park, and the coastal town of Ifaty.

Furthermore, attention will be paid to culture, including visits to local villages and markets.

Transport
Transport during the trip depends on the number of people in the group. The trip will proceed from 4 people upwards, and a minibus will then be used. Comfortable travel and excellent for travelling through Madagascar. Roof rack or trailer for luggage.

It is recommended to take out cancellation insurance, travel insurance is compulsory. Unfortunately, AfrikaOnline cannot arrange insurance, so we would be happy to refer you to, for example, the ANWB.

We kindly request that you provide us with the name of the insurer and the policy numbers of both insurances by email to AfrikaOnline as soon as possible and well before your departure.

Participation
From 12 years old, no maximum age. However, for every child under 18 years old, at least 1 adult must travel along. From 65 years old, a medical certificate of health may be requested for this trip, which you can obtain from your GP.

During the trip, walks will be undertaken that require a certain level of stamina. The walks are rated as easy to moderate and are optional at all times.

Luggage
Travel bag (due to space in the car, it's best to pack luggage in a travel bag or rucksack) with a maximum of 15-20 kg per person. A small rucksack for hand luggage in the car and photo equipment in addition to the 15-20 kg is permitted.
