It has a small harbour and is the home base of the South African navy.<\/p>\n<p>After visiting Simonstown, drive along a beautiful coastal route past places like Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, St. James and Muizenberg towards the Overberg region. This beautiful route, also known as the \u201cWhale Route\u201d, takes you past the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens with its magnificent proteas (the national flower of South Africa).<\/p>\n<p>En route, you will visit the village of Hermanus, where whales can be seen with their newborn calves from July to November. From Hermanus, you can take a \u201cwhalewatching\u201d tour by boat (to be booked and paid for on location).<\/p>\n<p>When visiting Hermanus outside of whale season, you can wander through the streets, browsing the many shops and visiting the old harbour. Afterwards, continue your drive to L\u2019 Agulhas.<\/p>\n<p>This is officially the southernmost point of the African continent, and it's where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. You could, for example, visit the town of Knysna, a charming seaside resort on a stunning lagoon.<\/p>\n<p>In and around Knysna, there are many options for day trips, such as a train trip with an antique steam train from Knysna to George and vice versa, via a superb route along the coast and the beautiful hinterland, or a boat trip on the lagoon with a visit to the Heads.<\/p>\n<p>If you love oysters, the Oyster Tavern on Thesen Isle is the place to go. Oysters are farmed in the Knysna lagoon and you can sample these delicacies at the Oyster Tavern. Furthermore, it is very pleasant to drive or walk to the Heads.<\/p>\n<p>A viewpoint at \u201cThe Heads\u201d offers a beautiful view of the sea, the lagoon, and Knysna. From Knysna, the seaside town of Plettenberg Bay, with its beautiful beaches, can also be visited.<\/p>\n<p>You can take a boat trip here across the bay to look for dolphins which are found here. This park has a nice campsite with a restaurant and a waterhole where, especially in dry times, the elephants come to drink water in the evenings.<\/p>\n<p>After the corridor with the Zuurberg National Park was established, the elephant herds have increased considerably again. Approximately 350 elephants now live in the densely vegetated, natural environment.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, buffalo, kudu, jackals, eland, red hartebeest and many bird species can also be seen here.
